Press Release

Sept. 9, 2009

Dr. Toy taps memory game
and children’s book by FocusBloom for top honors in this year’s eco-friendly toy
awards.

ASHLAND, Ma. – (Sept.
4, 2009) Little minds are fertile ground, and FocusBloom has been given industry kudos
for creating a toy that seeks to grow something vibrant and green in the
psyche of children.

The “I Cherish Planet Earth”
memory game and book set have been given Dr. Toy’s “Best Green Toy of 2009”
award, a distinction that sets it apart from the mass of other playthings manufactured
around the globe each year. The annual award gives recognition to novel green toys
produced and marketed in an eco-friendly way with safe and natural materials.
The awards showcase high-quality options available to green-minded consumers, encouraging
sustainable living practices.

“These 40 green products
constitute a small number among all the choices of play products available, but
we need to start somewhere,” says Stevanne Auerbach, the nationally recognized child
play expert known as ‘Dr. Toy.’ “As awareness grows, more families are thinking
and considering new directions that are safer, more balanced and healthier.”

The authors of “I Cherish
Planet Earth” – Margot Losa and Emily Kea – consider their picture book a “love
letter to Mother Earth.” In it they have paired beautiful artwork with text
that imparts green-living concepts to encourage children (ages 4-10) to be good
stewards of their environment and to appreciate the earth’s inhabitants.Icpegamephoto

These eco-friendly principles
are echoed in a matching game that comes with the book. Artful memory tiles feature
inspiring visuals and green affirmations such as “I love the forest,” “I recycle
and dispose with care,” “I celebrate peace” and “I pass things on.” To preview
illustrations from “I Cherish Planet Earth,” watch and listen to the YouTube music video clip by
children’s singer Charlie Hope.

“How our children see the
world in which they live is of ultimate importance. It’s vital to their growth
and future,” said Rob Wilson, vice president of Challenge & Fun Inc, a
natural toy wholesaler that distributes the award-winning eco-toy set. “That’s
why ‘I Cherish Planet Earth’ is so much more than your run-of-the-mill memory
exercise. The game reinforces the ideas introduced in the companion book, which
helps kids assimilate a love for nature, our planet and one another. Learning
and fun…it can’t get much better than that!”

Half a dozen activity
suggestions have been included with the book-game set to expand its educational
value. These application exercises allow children to respond to core ideas, helping
them retain the concepts long term.

This is the third year
DrToy.com has honored eco-minded companies and children’s products made from
sustainable materials and sold with minimized packaging. Products like “I
Cherish Planet Earth” are evaluated on toy safety, the messages they teach
children about Planet Earth, their use of natural resources, and other green
principles. The 48-piece matching game and book set is printed on recycled
paper, uses vegetable oil-based inks, and comes with a cotton drawstring pouch
– all made in the USA.

This Week's Prize: My First Dice Game

Monday, August 10th, 2009 by Challenge and Fun Inc

IMG_6038 Children love to play games.  They can't wait to be able to play "grown-up" games with dice.  The problem is, at the age of two or three, they aren't quite ready to count dots.

This game is perfect, they just match up the symbol on the die, such as a sun, tree, moon, or star, and they move their playing piece to the next spot with such a symbol.

Game play is similar to "Sorry" (without getting sent back to home) in that you have to move each of your pieces out from your corner and move around the circuit.

The other fun thing about this game is the board goes together as a puzzle.

Normally this game retails for $25.  It is currently on sale for $12.50, but we will be giving two out this Friday to two lucky Facebook Fans.

This game is made by Heros in Germany. Ages: 2-4   Number of Players: 2-4

"I Cherish Planet Earth" Meets Charlie Hope!

Friday, July 31st, 2009 by Challenge and Fun Inc

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoVDqHt1I8&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6]

It isn’t often that our product can “cross pollinate” but mixing Charlie Hope’s song “Loved” (from the newly released “World of Dreams” Lullaby CD) with the I Cherish Planet Earth green game & book set, seemed like a natural fit.  We think the end result turned out pretty good.  What do you think?

You can listen to more of Charlie Hopes lullaby’s on myspace, and see the artwork for I Cherish Planet Earth on our flickr page.

Stay tuned also for announcements about Charlie Hope’s upcoming northeast concert tour August 28-Sept 15th.  She will be performing at two music festivals and returning to many of the stores that hosted her in early July, as well as performing in New York & Connecticut.  We will also be working to get concerts set-up in southern California, where she now resides.

This Week's Prize: I Cherish Planet Earth

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 by Challenge and Fun Inc

Medly
This week's prize giveaway on our Facebook fan page is the I Cherish Planet Earth green game & book set.

I Cherish
Planet Earth

is much more than simply a book or a game.  The book introduces children
to our multi-faceted natural world.  It introduces 24 different nature
& earth loving affirmations such as “I love the forest” “I honor all animals” “I
conserve water” “I grow a garden” etc.  Each affirmation is lovingly described
alongside soft, beautiful pictures that bot h engage and delight.

Included
as a companion to the book, is a small sachet with 24 pairs of beautifully
illustrated tiles reinforcing each affirmation.
If fact, that is a key element that separates this game from other
classic memory or pair matching games.
According to the creator, Margot Losa “I remember so clearly, the
morning I drove my daughter to school, when the idea came to me like a flash,
to recreate the classic game with affirmations (never before done as far as I
know) and that it should be meaningful, about going green and about mother
earth!

Indeed,
I have seen this first hand.  As I have
read the book with my children, then played the memory game with my children, I
can see them relating with each concept as they turn over one tile and we read “I
conserve the water”, then another tile and we read “I protect the delicate”
etc.

However, what really gives these affirmations, and the entire book for that matter, meaning and soul is the beautiful illustrations by Emily Kea that accompany each affirmation.

This truly is a teaching tool that lends itself to so much more than simply reading a book or playing a game.  It comes
with a number of suggested extensions for engaging children further, whether in
a classroom or at home.  These include:

-                   Sharpening
memory:

Take a game piece, look at it for 30 seconds, close your eyes, bringing back
the picture in your mind.  Now tell all the different things you remember.

-                   What is
happening?

Make up stories & skits based on any of the pictures;

-                   What does it mean? Look up the
meaning of terms such as cherish, respect, honor, value, etc.;

-                   Discussion
time:

At the end of the game have each player look at the matching pairs they have
collected and discuss their meaning.  Talk about how we are a part of
nature and how it sustains us.

-                   Take action: Discuss
different ideas and decide the Earth-friendly changes you can make and commit
to in your life, home and neighborhood.

The
picture book helps build meaningful understanding, while the memory game
reinforces those ideas. The game extensions broaden thee are well considered
and offer the opportunity for communication, creative self-expression, and
action.

This
activity set is about appreciating and preserving nature and our planet. It
inspires all to learn about and care for all life, from the tiniest flower to
the greatest forest. It is a natural addition to any go-green program, at home,
in the neighborhood, at school, or within the community.

Of course I Cherish Planet Earth is printed
in the USA using vegetable oil based inks on recycled paper.  It is produced by FocusBloom which is a member of 1%
for the planet
.

I can go on an on, but of course I am a little biased.  Let's see what others have been saying:

I Cherish
Planet Earth gives a lot of bang for your bucks! Everything together in one
small package offers more than a book or game or affirmations separately. This
layering affects different areas of the brain, so you end up not just learning
about something but having an experience!

-Annie
McCandlis, School Principal

My fourth
graders and I spent over two hours discussing the affirmations and images on
each card – and we didn't even get through half of them in that time!

-Kris Hemion,
Teacher

How wonderful
this story is! It's truly amazing and the artwork compliments this perfectly. I
honestly get the chills reading through this book.

-Michelle Pugh,
Graphic Designer

Challenge & Fun Introduces "Lift A Child" Greeting Cards

Friday, August 8th, 2008 by Challenge and Fun Inc

Building Bridges  On a recent trip to Thailand, I happened across some greeting cards in my hotel lobby that were illustrated by chldren and produced by the Duang Prateep Foundation in Bangkok, Thailand.  I had heard about this organization from previous experiences in Thailand.  I knew about their excellent work in the slums of Bangkok.

I proceeded to contact them about bringing their cards to the USA, and including them as part of our product line.  They agreed, and so we have introduced them in our Fall Supplemental catalog (wholesale only).  We hope that they will begin to be available in stores near you (and online).  We will have them up on our website in the coming weeks.

Here is a little history of the Duang Prateep Foundation, and some of the worthy projects that they are actively engaged in.

The founder, Prateep Ungsongtham, grew up in the Klong Toey slum of Bangkok.  She worked very hard to save money to put herself through school.  She became a teacher, but eventually found she was spending more time dealing with life in the slums, than teaching.  She also began doing more advocacy work for the slum dwellers that didn't have a voice.

Eventually the Duang Prateep Foundation was established in 1978, with 5 staff members.  It has now grown to over 100 staff (most of whom are from the slum) and 20 volunteers.   The core program of the DPF is to establish kindergartens, and provide educational sponsorships.  They have also expanded into other areas including micro-credit, HIV/AIDS programs, drug rehabilitation programs, and more.

We are starting with 3 styles of the greeting cards, and hope to add more products from this organization (and other community organizations that make high quality products) in the future.  When you purchase these cards, you will not only be supporting the DPF, but we will be putting $0.15 from every card sale into a fund to support children's programs around the world.  Want to do more?  You can also make donations directly to this organization.  Want to do more?  Perhaps you have a blog, you can write about them and the many things they are doing to give children a chance through education.

Product of the Week: Lana Minis

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 by Challenge and Fun Inc

Bigger minis

The first stuffed animal I remember was "Snoopy." He was my best friend. He would follow me around the house, and comfort me when I had to go to bed before I thought I should, cheer me up when I was down, and generally brighten my day.

I am sure most of you can think of your favorite stuffed friend from your childhood.  Many of you probably have a child whose little friend is made by Lana.

The dilemma for parents soon becomes, do you let the stuffed toy leave the house?  I don't mean, does it go on vacations, or on overnight visits to Grandma's house.  I am talking about regular trips to the store, or on that visit to the doctor, or to the local playgroup.

Now there is a great solution.  Lana has developed the Lana Minis.  These miniature versions are 7" and small enough to fit into a purse or small bag.  They are a great size to keep in the glove compartment (but we prefer to see them visible hanging from the mirror) to be pulled out for a fussy child, or kept in a purse to entertain a child in a waiting room or comfort a child after a scraped knee.

These are made with the same quality you expect from the full-size Lana animals–just smaller.  They are made in Lithuania with organic cotton, and typically cost $25.

Product of the Week: Chelona Lotto Games

Monday, October 1st, 2007 by Challenge and Fun Inc

We have  representC42207_games_lotto_day1ed Chelona here  in the USA for almost 10 years.  In that time I have been impressed with a number of aspects of their toys.  One thing in particular  that stands out is the graphics and  subtle twists that they give ordinary games to make them  more interesting.

They have 2 Lotto games are excellent examples of this. The first is based on the theme "Have A Nice Day" which depicts four scenes from a child’s day.  The other (Four Seasons) depicts scenes from each season.

The game is played in the same way that lotto or bingo would be played.  Distribute the 4 wooden boards among up to 4 players.  Turn all the tiles upside-down and mix them up.  A designated player selects a wooden tile which should be matched with an object on one player’s board.

Instead of matching a picture on the board with the identical image on a tile, the player must match the object on the board with something from the picture tile.  In the image to the left, you can see that the sun matches the tile with the blonde boy and the sun outside.  When the board is filled it creates a complete picture.   The first person to collect all 6 tiles for their board wins.

So, is that all?  Of course, not.  These games can be played in many ways.  If a child isn’t ready for the lotto game they can work one card at at time to fill the board by recognizing the common object between the board and tiles.

It is also possible to simply use this game as a set of 4 puzzles…with illustrative hints (pictures on the boards) to help as necessary.

This item is Made In Greece.  It is available at online and offline across the country.  You can also purchase it on our retail website.

Product of the Week: Learning My Letters Flashcards

Monday, August 27th, 2007 by Challenge and Fun Inc

Flashcards The recent controversy over the effectiveness of baby videos lead me to write a posting about my views on these videos.  One of my main arguments against them was that young children learn best by interaction with others, not by passively sitting in front of the television.

These flashcards by TJ Whitneys’ Toys are a wonderful example of an educational activity that parent and child can play together.  These cards combine vintage images from the 1950s as a visual reminder of each letter, with a complete sentence
using the key word for that letter. The reverse side shows the bold capital letter on a neutral background.

These cards can be used for more than regular flash card letter identification.  Turn the cards over to the letter-only side to create words, or to put the alphabet in order.  Or read the cards together, since the sentences are appropriate for early learners.

The cards are made from recycled inner "grayboard" and new outer paper and come in a nicely decorated gift box.   The cards are  6 3/4 x 5 1/4" .  They are available in toy stores, gift stores, and in many online stores.  They are also available from our website www.challengeandfun.com.

Product of the Week: Kallisto Animal Rattles

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007 by Challenge and Fun Inc

Bild7_3 (Mouse, Pig, Rabbit, Dog, Bear)

Sometimes a full size teddy bear or other stuffed animal is a little too much for a young toddler.  Usually they need a little friend more their size.

These 10" stuffed animals are just the right size be carried around the house, snuggled with at nap time, and played with during playtime.

They contain small rattles in their body to added sensory and rhythmic development.  They are made in Germany by home workers and each doll is inspected, and the faces lovingly finished, by Brigitte Schultz herself (owner of Kallisto).  The cotton is 100% organic, and the bodies are colored with color grown cotton.  Dyes used for the heads, hands, and feet are certified for use with organic products to ensure the cleanest possible product.

We have identified one possible problem with this range of animal rattles—how to choose between the available styles!  If you can figure out which one (or two) you like best, you can order online today.

Product of the Week: Toy Memories Match

Sunday, August 5th, 2007 by Challenge and Fun Inc

The Toy Memories Match by TJ Whitneys’ Toys is a great addition to any toy collection.  It is one my son’s favorite toys to play as a family.  He is not quite 4 years old so he is still learning the rules and learning patience with other players finding matching pairs that he would like; in any case it is a game that he enjoys and will learn to appreciate more as he gets a little older (it is rated for 4+).

ToymatchlgWinner of a Creative Child Magazine Award
in 2005, this game comes with 48 2" carded tiles (24 matching pairs).  The cards are made with grayboard which  is a recycled product (the paper is new).  The 24 pairs are illustrations of classic toys, by Canadian artist Carrie Kendall, such as a baby doll, ABC Blocks, a spinning top, a fire truck, a play cash register, and more.

The Toy Memories Match game can be played in the classic manner, by turning the pieces upside down and taking turns to turn over 2 pieces to see if they match.  If they do, the player can keep them—and go again— if not, the player turns them back over and another player chooses 2 tiles to turn over.  However there are other ways to approach this game.  It can be used as a teaching tool in many ways such as simply finding the matching pairs (without playing the game), or matching toys of the same color, or discussing each toy, or sorting by favorite toy, etc.  The important thing is that parents or caregivers are interacting and having a discussion with the child, and using the toy as a teaching tool.

The game is attractively packaged in decorative box (10 1/4” x 9” x 2”) and makes a wonderful gift.  It is available on our website and in stores and websites across the country.
